Kirilenko rolls; Benesova ousted in Estoril

05/06/2009 - Estoril, Portugal (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Reigning champion Maria Kirilenko was an easy second-round winner, while top-seeded Czech Iveta Benesova went by way of the upset Wednesday at the $220,000 Estoril Open.

The second-seeded Russian Kirilenko drubbed Argentine Maria Emilia Salerni 6-3, 6-0, while the 2008 Estoril runner-up Benesova gave way to Slovakian Jarmila Groth 7-5, 6-4 on the red clay at National Stadium. Kirilenko defeated Benesova in last year's finale here.

Kirilenko's quarterfinal opponent on Thursday will be last week's Fes runner- up and fellow Russian Ekaterina Makarova, who slipped past Hungarian Melinda Czink 5-7, 7-5, 7-5 on Day 3. Makarova is seeded sixth here.

Meanwhile, third-seeded Romanian Sorana Cirstea handled Estonian Maret Ani 7-5, 6-2; fourth-seeded German Sabine Lisicki topped Russian qualifier Elena Bovina 6-4, 7-5; seventh-seeded Israeli Shahar Peer pasted Czech Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-4, 6-1; and eighth-seeded Anna-Lena Groenefeld grounded fellow German Kristina Barrois 6-4, 6-4.

One other second-rounder saw Belgian Yanina Wickmayer fight back to beat Belarusian Olga Govortsova 0-6, 6-2, 6-2.

The other quarters will pit Cirtsea against Wickmayer, Lisicki versus her countrywoman Groenefeld and Peer against Groth.

The 2009 Estoril champ will collect $37,000.
